- Pope Francis Makes Emotional P ...

Vatican City, April 6, 2025 — Pope Francis made an emotional return to public life on Sunday, greeting crowds in St. Peter’s Square for the first time since being discharged from the hospital following treatment for double pneumonia.
The 88-year-old pontiff entered the square in a wheelchair just before noon, appearing at the conclusion of a special Mass marking the Catholic Church’s Jubilee year. Smiling warmly and waving to the crowd, Pope Francis spoke briefly in a frail but clearer voice, saying, “Happy Sunday to everyone. Thank you so much,” while receiving oxygen via a discreet nasal tube.
This marks his first public appearance since March 23, when he was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli hospital after a serious 38-day health crisis — the most severe of his 12-year papacy. He had been absent from his usual Sunday addresses since February 9, when he was first hospitalized for bronchitis, which later developed into double pneumonia. His condition was critical at times, with doctors reportedly considering end-of-life care.
Sunday’s Mass was held in honor of healthcare workers and those who are ill — a fitting occasion for the Pope’s return. In a written message released by the Vatican following the service, Pope Francis reflected on his experience in the hospital: “I felt the closeness of God… I ask the Lord that this touch of his love might reach all those who suffer and encourage those who are taking care of them.”
His appearance brought joy and relief to the faithful gathered in the square, many of whom were visibly emotional as they saw the Pope smiling and speaking again.
