IPL 2025: Riyan Parag Fails Bat Gauge Test, Forced to Change Bat Mid-Innings vs Delhi Capitals
The BCCI’s latest regulation to ensure balance between bat and ball saw yet another enforcement during the IPL 2025 season. This time, Rajasthan Royals’ Riyan Parag became the latest batter to be caught in the net of the bat gauge test during their clash against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Parag walked in to bat after Sanju Samson retired hurt in the fifth over, but was immediately stopped by the on-field umpires. His bat failed to meet the legal dimensions under the new rule, prompting an animated exchange before he was made to switch equipment.
This comes after similar incidents involving Sunil Narine and Anrich Nortje, with the bat-check protocol becoming one of the most talked-about rules this IPL season.
Why This Rule Matters
As per BCCI’s new guidelines for IPL 2025:
- A bat gauge will be used before every batter takes strike.
- Openers’ bats are checked by the fourth umpire before the match begins.
- All subsequent batters are screened by the on-field umpires.
IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal explained the intent:
“This rule is meant to ensure fair competition between batters and bowlers. Technology is being used to preserve the spirit of the game.”
The bat gauge rule aims to curb the use of overly thick or customized bats that could offer an unfair hitting advantage, maintaining transparency and fairness in T20 cricket.
As IPL 2025 continues, expect more such incidents as the BCCI strictly implements this new rule across all fixtures.
