Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) in Bengaluru has made history by becoming the first airport in Asia to achieve the prestigious Level 5 Carbon Accreditation. This major milestone, effective from May 5, 2024, marks a turning point in the aviation industry’s sustainability journey across the continent.

The award was officially presented to Bengaluru Airport representatives at the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific & Middle East Regional Assembly held in New Delhi between April 15 and 17.

Breaking New Ground in Sustainability

Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) shared that this accreditation recognises their exceptional efforts in carbon management and environmental responsibility. The airport achieved an impressive 95.6% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions, enabling it to reach net-zero status a full seven years ahead of its original 2030 target.

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from company-owned sources (e.g., airport vehicles, fuel combustion).
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity and heating.

Leadership Remarks

Hari Marar, Managing Director & CEO of BIAL, celebrated the achievement, stating:

“The ACI recognition reaffirms our collective efforts to drive sustainability, foster innovation, and create a community-focused culture at Bengaluru Airport.”

How Bengaluru Airport Achieved It

Over the years, Kempegowda International Airport has rolled out several environmental initiatives to minimize its carbon footprint:

  • Renewable Energy: Extensive use of solar power to run airport operations.
  • Smart Infrastructure: Advanced building management systems for energy optimization.
  • Electric Mobility: Deployment of electric vehicles across the airport.
  • Water Conservation: Sustainable water management and recycling efforts.
  • Waste Management: Comprehensive programs to reduce landfill waste.
  • Biodiversity Initiatives: Efforts to protect and enhance local ecosystems.

A Global Example

This recognition places Bengaluru Airport among a select few globally that have demonstrated true leadership in aviation sustainability. With passenger traffic growing steadily since its opening in 2008, BLR Airport has become not only a major transport hub but also a role model for eco-conscious infrastructure development.

Moreover, the achievement supports India’s broader national commitments to climate action and sustainable development, reinforcing the country’s capability to deliver world-class, green infrastructure projects.

Looking Ahead

As BLR Airport continues to expand, the sustainability protocols already in place will guide future growth — ensuring that economic development goes hand in hand with environmental stewardship.
