Bengaluru Metro Red Line Work Set to Begin: Hebbal to Sarjapur Route Announced
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is fast-tracking Phase 3 of the Namma Metro project with the initiation of the much-anticipated Red Line. Designed to significantly enhance Bengaluru’s mass rapid transit network, the new line will link Hebbal in the north to Sarjapur in the southeast across a 36.59-kilometer corridor.
BMRCL officials have emphasized that this new alignment will greatly benefit key areas such as Koramangala, St. John’s, Madiwala, Dairy Circle, KR Circle, Golf Course, and Mekhri Circle — localities that currently lack robust metro connectivity and suffer from heavy traffic congestion during peak hours.
The Red Line aims to cut travel times and reduce the city’s growing traffic woes by offering a reliable metro alternative. The project includes the development of 28 new metro stations strategically placed to improve connectivity between the northern and southeastern parts of Bengaluru.
Both the central and state governments have approved the project, and while the route survey has been completed, land acquisition is currently underway. Officials confirmed that construction is expected to begin within the next year, with the total project cost estimated at approximately ₹28,405 crore.
The Red Line will feature a mix of construction styles, including 14.45 kilometers of underground tunnels and 22.14 kilometers of elevated tracks. Once completed, it will serve as a vital link in Bengaluru’s expanding metro network, complementing the existing east-west and north-south corridors and improving urban mobility across the city.
