Indian Railways is reportedly evaluating a major fare revision for its premier Vande Bharat Express trains, following public and political pressure to make the service more accessible to the general population.
Launched in 2019 as a symbol of India’s rail modernization, the Vande Bharat Express has impressed travelers with its semi-high-speed capability, advanced features, and premium comfort. However, its relatively high ticket prices have sparked criticism, particularly from middle- and lower-income passengers who find it financially out of reach.
With 136 Vande Bharat services currently operating across major intercity routes under 800 km, the train has become a favorite for those seeking quick and comfortable journeys. But the premium pricing has limited its accessibility, undermining its potential as a truly national service.

Congress MP Rakibul Hussain recently raised the issue during a session in the Lok Sabha, directly questioning Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw about the possibility of a fare reduction. The question, widely covered by media, reflects a growing demand for fare reforms that align with the government’s goal of equitable infrastructure development.
Sources within the Railway Ministry indicate that the government is actively considering ways to revise the pricing structure. Options reportedly on the table include subsidized or tiered pricing models to accommodate passengers from diverse income backgrounds.
