Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding comedian Kunal Kamra, emphasizing that the right to freedom of speech should not be misused to defame others. He expressed concern over how free speech is sometimes exploited as a tool to create divisions in the country.

UP CM’s Take on Free Speech

In an exclusive interview with ANI, Adityanath stated, “Freedom of expression exists within the framework of the law and constitutional values. It should not be used to attack or slander others.”

He further added, “It is unfortunate that some individuals believe it is their birthright to use free speech to divide the country. The law should take action against those who attempt to create discord.”

What Did Kunal Kamra Say?

Kunal Kamra recently performed parody versions of Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic songs Bholi Si Surat and Baadshah O Baadshah, taking jabs at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Through his modified lyrics, Kamra indirectly referred to Shinde as a “traitor” for splitting the Shiv Sena.

His act sparked outrage among supporters of Shinde’s faction. In response, a group of Shiv Sena workers stormed the Habitat Comedy Club, where Kamra’s show was held, and vandalized the venue.

Kamra Stands His Ground

Despite the backlash, Kamra has refused to apologize. He defended his act by stating, “What I said is exactly what Ajit Pawar said about Eknath Shinde.” He also criticized the vandalism at the comedy venue, adding, “Habitat is not responsible for my jokes, nor does it have any control over what I say.”

Legal Action Taken

Following the controversy, an FIR has been registered against both Kunal Kamra for his remarks and the youth wing of the Shiv Sena for the destruction of the comedy studio. The incident has sparked a wider debate on the limits of free speech and political satire in India.
