Karnataka Caste Survey Highlights Demographic Shifts
The recent Karnataka caste survey has unveiled substantial demographic changes over the past four decades. Muslim and Scheduled Caste (SC) populations have each grown by over 90% since 1984, whereas the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community has seen an 8.5% increase.
The survey, encompassing 5.98 crore residents, identified 1,351 castes and sub-castes. Muslims now constitute approximately 12.9% of the state’s population, with 99 sub-groups, including Shia, Bohra, and Irani Muslims. SCs represent over 18%, and Scheduled Tribes (STs) account for about 7%.
In contrast, the Lingayat community comprises 11.09% of the population, and Vokkaligas make up 10.3%. These figures are lower than previous estimates, leading to discontent among these dominant groups. The survey also notes that Kurubas, the community of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, represent 7.3% of the population .
The findings have sparked political debates, with discussions on increasing reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) from 32% to 51% and for Muslims from 4% to 8%. A special cabinet meeting was convened on April 17 to deliberate on these recommendations .
The survey’s revelations are expected to influence Karnataka’s socio-political landscape, particularly concerning reservation policies and community representation.
