Dhaka, Bangladesh: A massive fire erupted on Saturday afternoon at the cargo terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, prompting authorities to suspend all flight operations.
The incident occurred around 2:30 pm when flames engulfed the airport’s cargo village—an area used to store imported goods. Airport Executive Director Md Masudul Hasan Masud confirmed at around 3:45 pm that emergency response teams were working to bring the situation under control.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), multiple firefighting units from the Bangladesh Fire Service, Civil Aviation Authority, and the Bangladesh Air Force were dispatched immediately. The Bangladesh Navy has also joined the operation to assist in extinguishing the fire.
Officials said that all arrivals and departures have been suspended as a precautionary measure while emergency crews continue to battle the blaze. The exact cause of the fire and the extent of damage remain unknown as investigations are underway.
Authorities have urged travelers to stay updated on flight status and cooperate with emergency management personnel as operations remain temporarily halted at one of South Asia’s busiest airports.
