In a tragic incident, a 21-year-old NEET aspirant from Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, died by suicide at a hostel in Kanpur’s Rawatpur area on Friday — only four days after he had moved in to prepare for the medical entrance examination.
The deceased, identified as Mohammad Aan, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his room when hostel authorities and police broke open the door after his roommate raised an alarm.
🏠 Incident Details
According to police, Aan’s roommate had gone out for Friday prayers and returned to find the room locked from inside. When repeated knocks and calls went unanswered, the hostel management informed the police. The door was then forced open, revealing that Aan had taken his own life.
A suicide note was recovered from the scene, in which he expressed remorse and addressed his parents with the words,
“Mom, Dad — forgive me.”
His body was later sent for post-mortem examination.
👮 Police Investigation Underway
The Rawatpur police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to determine the exact reasons behind the incident. Officers said no foul play has been suspected so far, but statements from family members and hostel residents are being recorded.
Police officials stated that academic stress and isolation may have played a role, though the exact motive will be confirmed only after further inquiry.
📚 Rising Pressure on NEET Aspirants
The incident once again highlights the growing mental health crisis among students preparing for competitive exams like NEET and JEE, where long hours of study, high expectations, and intense competition can lead to emotional strain.
Authorities have urged coaching institutes and hostel operators to offer regular counseling sessions and mental health support to students.
