New Delhi: In a shocking development in the Delhi UPSC murder case, police revealed that 21-year-old forensic science student Amrita Chauhan, accused of orchestrating the murder of her live-in partner Ramkesh Meena, had been disowned by her family more than a year before the crime.
Court documents show that Amrita’s parents issued a public notice on July 8, 2024, cutting all ties with her. The newspaper advertisement, now part of the case evidence, adds a tragic new dimension to one of the capital’s most chilling murder cases in recent memory.
🔥 The Murder and Cover-Up
The case revolves around the death of UPSC aspirant Ramkesh Meena, whose charred body was discovered earlier this month in a burnt flat in Gandhi Vihar, North Delhi. What initially appeared to be an accidental fire was later exposed as a premeditated murder, allegedly planned by Amrita with help from her ex-boyfriend, Sumit Kashyap, and his friend Sandeep Kumar, both from Moradabad.
According to Delhi Police, Amrita had been living with Meena since May 2025. Their relationship deteriorated after she learned that Meena had secretly recorded private videos of her and refused to delete them. Feeling humiliated, she allegedly contacted Sumit to “teach him a lesson,” leading to the murder plot.
On the night of October 5–6, the trio travelled from Moradabad to Delhi. CCTV footage captured two masked men and a woman entering Meena’s building. Hours later, around 2:57 am, the same woman — identified as Amrita — was seen leaving with one of the men. Moments after their exit, a massive explosion destroyed the flat.
🕵️♂️ Investigation Findings
Investigators say the blast was staged to mask the killing. “The accused strangled Meena, poured ghee, oil, and alcohol on the body, and then opened a gas cylinder valve to start the fire,” said DCP (North) Raja Banthia.
Police noted that Amrita’s forensic science training helped her devise the cover-up. However, inconsistencies in the burn pattern, CCTV footage, and mobile location data soon exposed the truth.
Amrita was arrested on October 18, after digital forensics confirmed her presence at the scene. During questioning, she confessed to her role and detailed how she and her accomplices strangled Meena and set the flat ablaze. Her co-conspirators — Sumit and Sandeep — were arrested on October 21 and 23, respectively.
Police also recovered a hard disk, two mobile phones, a trolley bag, and Meena’s shirt from the suspects’ possession.
⚖️ Background and Motive
Investigators say Amrita’s deep interest in crime web series and her academic background in forensic science emboldened her to attempt what she believed would be a perfect murder.
“She thought she could outsmart investigators using her training,” an officer said, “but digital footprints and her own confession shattered that illusion.”
Amrita’s family has refused to comment, reiterating that they cut ties with her in 2024 and have no involvement in her current situation.
