UK Foreign Secretary Holds Talks With Jaishankar, Pakistani Counterpart Amid Rising India-Pakistan Tensions
Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy spoke separately with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday.
Jaishankar conveyed India’s firm policy of “zero tolerance” towards terrorism during his conversation with Lammy, citing the “cross-border linkages” to the Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians. “Spoke to Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy of the UK today. Discussed the cross-border terrorist attack at Pahalgam. Underlined the importance of zero tolerance for terrorism,” Jaishankar said in a post on social media.
Meanwhile, Lammy also held talks with Pakistani Deputy PM Ishaq Dar, who reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to defending its national interests while emphasizing a desire to promote peace in the region. According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Dar raised concerns over India’s recent unilateral actions, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, which Islamabad termed a “clear violation” of international obligations.
Lammy reportedly stressed the importance of de-escalation and resolving issues through peaceful dialogue during both conversations.
India has responded firmly to the Pahalgam attack by suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, closing the Attari border crossing, and downgrading diplomatic ties with Pakistan. In retaliation, Pakistan shut its airspace to Indian aircraft and suspended all trade links with India, including indirect routes through third countries.
The diplomatic exchanges between Lammy, Jaishankar, and Dar follow a wave of global support for India after the terror attack. Several world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, expressed solidarity with India and condemned the attack.
On Sunday, during his ‘Mann ki Baat’ address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reassured the nation, stating, “The perpetrators and conspirators of this attack will be served with the harshest response.”
