A tragic mid-air collision over Sydney on Sunday has claimed the life of pilot Eddie Seve, after two light aircraft participating in an aerobatic formation display collided moments before landing.
According to authorities, the two planes were returning to a nearby airfield after taking part in a formation show alongside two other aircraft. The collision occurred just before touchdown, sending Eddie Seve’s aircraft plummeting to the ground.
Emergency services rushed to the crash site but were unable to save the pilot.
The second aircraft, piloted by Ollie Geragthy, managed to land safely at a nearby airfield, and he escaped without injuries.
Two separate areas have been cordoned off as the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and New South Wales Police launch a detailed investigation into the tragedy.
The ATSB confirmed that investigators will:
- Interview the other participating pilots
- Examine air traffic control recordings
- Review flight tracking data
- Check pilot records, maintenance history, and weather conditions
Both pilots were members of the Freedom Formation Display Team (FFDT) — the largest formation aerobatic squad in the Southern Hemisphere.
In a statement, FFDT expressed their grief:
“We are deeply saddened to confirm the accident involving some of our aircraft. We are fully supporting authorities in their investigation and offering all possible assistance to team members and families.”
The aviation community across Australia has expressed shock and sorrow following the accident.
