NEW DELHI: Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has confirmed that he has registered for an overseas franchise league, marking the start of a new chapter in his cricketing career just days after bidding farewell to the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Ashwin, who announced his IPL retirement earlier this week, wrapped up his 16-season stint with 187 wickets in 221 matches, making him the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history. A two-time IPL champion with Chennai Super Kings, the 38-year-old said he is now keen to explore cricketing opportunities abroad.
“Of course I won’t be playing everywhere for 10 months. I’ll participate only in leagues where my skills fit the team’s requirements. I’ve already registered for one of them, and let’s see how it unfolds,” Ashwin shared on his YouTube channel.
The veteran spinner added that playing overseas excites him as it comes without the weight of expectations. “Outside India, nobody knows you. You can bowl with freedom, without pressure, and truly enjoy the game. I want to experience cricket the same way I once enjoyed playing on the streets,” he said.
Beyond cricket, Ashwin emphasized his desire for personal freedom and balance. “I want to live life on my terms, bring happiness to myself and others, and continue balancing cricket with family responsibilities. That’s the ultimate challenge now,” he noted.
