Rahul Gandhi’s Germany Remarks on Indian Institutions Spark Political Row

Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has sparked a political controversy with remarks made during his visit to Germany, where he alleged a “full-scale assault” on India’s institutional framework. His statements drew sharp reactions from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which accused him of speaking against India on foreign soil.

Speaking at a lecture in Berlin, Rahul Gandhi reiterated his long-standing allegations of “vote theft” against the BJP-led government, claiming that recent Assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra were not conducted fairly. He also said the Congress did not receive a satisfactory response from the Election Commission after flagging issues such as duplicate voters in electoral rolls.

Addressing students at the Hertie School during a lecture titled “Politics Is The Art Of Listening”, Gandhi accused the Centre of “weaponising” institutions such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and intelligence agencies. He alleged that these agencies were selectively used against political opponents and businessmen who support the Congress.

Rahul Gandhi further argued that the BJP’s approach to governance stems from an ideological belief that all Indians are not equal, referring to caste-based discrimination. He said India is currently witnessing a clash between two visions—one that he claims centralises power, and another that supports dialogue, diversity, and federalism.

He also acknowledged that many Indians support Prime Minister Narendra Modi but said there are millions who disagree with the government’s ideology and fear it could lead to social divisions and internal tensions.

The BJP reacted strongly to Gandhi’s comments. Union Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje criticised him for making such remarks abroad, saying he “still behaves like a child, not a leader.” BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari questioned Gandhi’s intentions and accused him of portraying India negatively on an international platform.

Bhandari also took to social media, alleging that Gandhi’s remarks suggested instability and unrest in India, and accused the Congress of undermining Indian democracy. The BJP leaders said such statements harm the country’s global image and accused Gandhi of aligning with anti-India narratives.

Rahul Gandhi is currently on a five-day visit to Germany, during which he has been interacting with academic and policy institutions while continuing to raise concerns about Indian democracy and governance.
