Monsoon Reaches Maharashtra Ahead of Schedule—Earliest in 35 Years

In a rare weather event, the southwest monsoon reached Maharashtra on Sunday, May 25, just a day after making landfall in Kerala. This marks the earliest onset of the monsoon season over Maharashtra in the past 35 years, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The early arrival is a positive sign for agriculture and water resources in the state, particularly as farmers prepare for the upcoming sowing season.

The IMD further noted that the monsoon is likely to advance to Mumbai and other nearby areas within the next three days, bringing relief from the intense pre-monsoon heat.

Meteorologists say that favorable conditions such as the strengthening of westerly winds and increased moisture over the Arabian Sea have helped accelerate the monsoon’s movement up the western coast of India.

This unusually early onset raises hopes for a longer and potentially more balanced monsoon season across central and northern parts of India.
