Lionel Messi marked his return to Inter Miami’s starting lineup with a goal in a thrilling 2-1 victory over Atlanta United FC on Sunday. Substitute Fafà Picault sealed the win with an 89th-minute header, securing Miami’s third win of the MLS regular season despite Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan’s six saves.

Miami (3-1-0) avenged last season’s MLS Cup playoff elimination at the hands of Atlanta, who stunned the Supporters’ Shield winners in a three-game series.

Messi’s Early Impact

Messi, making just his second MLS appearance this season after missing three games with muscle fatigue, scored in the 20th minute to pull Miami level. The World Cup winner, who returned to action as a substitute in Thursday’s 2-0 Concacaf Champions Cup win over Cavalier FC, was instrumental in Miami’s attacking play.

“Well, Leo’s goal—he’s the best player in the history of this sport, there’s nothing more to say,” Miami manager Javier Mascherano said. “His ability to score the most beautiful goals is unmatched. We’re happy he’s back after three tough weeks out.”

Atlanta’s Early Lead and Miami’s Fightback

Atlanta (1-1-2) struck first in the 11th minute, when Emmanuel Latte Lath powered a header past goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo following a pinpoint cross from Brooks Lennon. Latte Lath thought he had doubled the lead minutes later, but his goal was ruled offside.

Miami responded quickly. Messi pounced on a misplaced pass from Atlanta’s Bartosz Slisz, evaded Derrick Williams’ sliding challenge, and chipped Guzan to bring Miami level.

Picault’s Late Winner

The match remained evenly contested until Picault produced a decisive moment in the 89th minute. After a short corner, Jordi Alba sent in a curling cross to the back post, where Picault outmuscled Ajani Fortune and headed the ball inside the far post—leaving Guzan wrong-footed.

It was Picault’s first goal for Inter Miami since joining from Vancouver, and his impact helped Miami clinch a vital win.

Mascherano Praises MLS Growth

Reflecting on his time in MLS, Mascherano expressed admiration for the league’s development and competitiveness.

“There are many teams with good ideas and talented players who could compete in European leagues,” he said. “I like the league’s organization and how everything functions—it allows me to focus purely on training and preparing for matches.”
