Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala may soon join the next phase of Indian Railways’ modernisation journey, as the state is likely to get one of the first Vande Bharat sleeper trains within this year. This upgraded version of the popular semi-high-speed train is expected to start its sleeper service in 2025, offering long-distance travelers enhanced comfort, speed, and convenience.

According to railway sources, one train from the initial batch of sleeper Vande Bharat rakes is being considered for deployment in Kerala. The Railway Board is currently evaluating route proposals, and a high-demand corridor with strong public support is likely to be selected — increasing the chances of Kerala getting onboard this much-anticipated service.

The sleeper version of Vande Bharat will feature air-conditioned coaches with modern amenities, targeting overnight journeys that require both speed and comfort. The train is expected to bridge major cities and regions across the country more efficiently, while maintaining the premium experience associated with the Vande Bharat brand.

This development comes as part of Indian Railways’ broader effort to expand and diversify the Vande Bharat fleet, making the trains more accessible to long-distance travelers. With construction of sleeper rakes already underway, trial runs are anticipated to begin soon.

If all goes as planned, Kerala could witness the launch of its first sleeper Vande Bharat service before the end of this year — a move that could redefine train travel in the state.
