The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded multiple rain alerts across Karnataka with 14 districts placed on high alert due to intense monsoon activity. While coastal and Western Ghats regions are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, interior parts including Bengaluru will continue to see light to moderate showers till June 18.
Red alerts have been issued for districts likely to face the brunt of the downpour, including Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Shivamogga. These areas may also experience strong winds with speeds reaching 40–50 kmph.
Orange alerts cover Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Chamarajanagar, Davanagere, Hassan, and Mysuru, where significant rainfall activity is expected.
A yellow alert is in place for Mandya, Koppal, Kalaburagi, Bidar, and Bengaluru, warning residents to be cautious of localized heavy rain.
Meteorologists attribute this spike in rainfall to two weather systems: a cyclonic circulation over Marathwada and a trough stretching from Telangana to Andhra Pradesh. Additionally, a previous circulation near South Bangladesh is amplifying rainfall intensity over Karnataka.
In a positive development, Karnataka’s farmers are seeing early monsoon benefits. As of June 13, sowing had been completed across 20.42 lakh hectares—171% higher than the usual 11.95 lakh hectares for this period. Agriculture Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy credited government efforts for timely seed and fertiliser availability and added that daily monitoring is being undertaken to support the farming community.
