Bengaluru is set to get a second international airport as the Karnataka government has shortlisted three potential locations and submitted a proposal to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation for approval.
Karnataka Infrastructure Minister M B Patil announced on Friday (March 7) that the proposed sites include two locations along Kanakapura Road near Harohalli and one on Kunigal Road in Nelamangala. Sharing the update on ‘X,’ he described it as a significant step toward enhancing the state’s global connectivity and ensuring future-ready infrastructure.
Patil highlighted that the city’s existing Kempegowda International Airport in Devanahalli has an exclusivity clause until 2033. However, with passenger traffic expected to reach 100 million by 2030, the need for a second airport has become urgent.
“With a forward-looking approach, we have initiated early preparations. If we start now, the project could take around seven to eight years to materialize,” Patil stated.
