India has achieved a major milestone in its defence sector, with exports reaching a record ₹38,424 crore in the financial year 2025–26. This marks a significant 62.7% increase compared to ₹23,622 crore in the previous fiscal, underscoring the country’s growing strength as a global defence manufacturing hub.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hailed the achievement, stating that the sharp rise reflects increasing international trust in India’s indigenous capabilities. He emphasized that the growth aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of positioning India among the world’s leading defence exporters.

Public and Private Sectors Fuel Growth

The expansion in exports has been driven by a balanced contribution from both public and private players. Defence Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) accounted for approximately 54.84% of total exports, contributing ₹21,071 crore. Meanwhile, private sector firms made up 45.16%, exporting goods worth ₹17,353 crore.

PSUs recorded a remarkable year-on-year growth of 151%, while private companies posted a steady increase of 14%, highlighting the strengthening ecosystem of domestic defence manufacturing.

Diverse Range of Military Exports

India’s export portfolio has expanded to include a wide variety of high-value defence equipment. This includes missile systems such as the BrahMos, advanced artillery and radar systems, electronic warfare technologies, and armoured vehicles.

Additionally, India is exporting aircraft like the Dornier 228, naval vessels, and essential protective gear such as bulletproof jackets and body armour. The range demonstrates India’s capability to supply both complete systems and critical components to global markets.

Exports Expand to Over 80 Countries

India’s defence products are now reaching more than 80 countries, indicating a rapidly expanding international footprint. Key markets include the United States, France, and Armenia, along with other partners across Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Growing Number of Defence Exporters

The number of Indian companies involved in defence exports has increased to 145 in FY 2025–26, up from 128 the previous year. This growth reflects rising participation from domestic industries and a strengthening industrial base.

India’s Global Defence Ambition

Over the past five years, India’s defence exports have nearly tripled, showcasing strong momentum in its push for self-reliance and global competitiveness. Backed by policy support, technological advancements, and increasing international demand, India is steadily positioning itself as a key player in the global defence market.
