India has stepped forward to support Afghanistan after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake devastated parts of the country, claiming more than 800 lives and injuring thousands.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi on Monday, expressing condolences and assuring that New Delhi stands with Kabul during this crisis.
According to Jaishankar, 1,000 family tents have already been delivered to Kabul, while 15 tonnes of food supplies were dispatched from India’s mission in Kabul to Kunar province. He further confirmed that additional relief consignments will be sent from India starting Tuesday.
In a post on X, Jaishankar wrote:
“Spoke with Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi today. Expressed our condolences at the loss of lives in the earthquake. Conveyed that India has delivered 1000 family tents today in Kabul. 15 tonnes of food material is also being immediately moved by Indian Mission from Kabul to Kunar. Further relief material will be sent from India starting tomorrow. Wish early recovery of those injured. India stands by Afghanistan at this difficult time.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief, saying India is ready to provide “all possible humanitarian aid.” He wrote:
“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the earthquake in Afghanistan. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families in this difficult hour, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured. India stands ready to provide all possible humanitarian aid and relief to those affected.”
Meanwhile, rescue operations are ongoing in remote mountainous areas where many remain trapped under debris. The quake’s epicenter was near Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, followed by a 4.7 aftershock.
Authorities in Kunar province reported deaths and injuries across several districts, including Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi, and Chapadare, as emergency teams continue their efforts.
