Faridabad: In a chilling case that highlights the growing menace of AI-generated deepfake crimes, a 19-year-old college student from Baselwa Colony in Old Faridabad died by suicide on Saturday evening after being blackmailed with morphed photos and videos of his sisters.

According to police at the NIT police station, the B.Com undergraduate was allegedly targeted by two unidentified individuals who hacked into his phone and gained access to his personal data nearly ten days before his death.

How the Blackmail Began

Investigators said the suspects first contacted the victim via a messaging app, claiming they had created AI-generated visuals featuring him and his sisters. They demanded ₹20,000 to prevent the circulation of the deepfakes online.

“They had created morphed pictures and images of the deceased, along with his sisters,” a senior police official said, requesting anonymity.

The harassment reportedly intensified over the following days, with the victim receiving persistent threats and messages. Unable to share his ordeal with family or friends, the teenager became increasingly anxious and withdrawn.

The Tragic End

On Saturday around 7 p.m., the student allegedly consumed poison inside his room. His family immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed during treatment, officials confirmed.

Faridabad Police spokesperson Yashpal Yadav said that a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and efforts are underway to identify and arrest the two suspects.

Investigation Underway

Police are now examining the victim’s mobile phone, chat logs, and social media accounts to determine how the hackers gained access to his data and created the morphed content.

Preliminary findings suggest that the victim’s phone was compromised through malicious links or third-party apps, allowing the accused to access private photos and generate AI-based fake visuals.

“We are analyzing the digital trail to trace the location and devices used by the suspects,” investigators said.

Family members told police that the young student had been unusually quiet and stressed in the days before his death. “He had stopped interacting with friends and appeared very tense,” one relative said.

Rise of AI-Driven Cyber Blackmail

Experts warn that this case reflects a disturbing new trend of cyber-harassment using AI deepfake technology, where realistic synthetic images or videos are created to defame or extort victims.

Cybercrime units across India have reported a spike in similar incidents, prompting calls for stronger digital privacy laws and public awareness campaigns to combat online exploitation.
