Egypt is determined to protect the legendary Giza Pyramids while maintaining its critical tourism industry, which contributed around 10% of its GDP in 2024. With visitor numbers soaring to nearly 17.5 million last year — and a target of 30 million by 2030 — the country is taking urgent action to safeguard the world-famous site from overwhelming crowds, scams, and environmental degradation.

Overcrowding and chaotic surroundings around the Giza Necropolis had led to mounting complaints from tourists. Reports of harassment by aggressive vendors, tourist scams, and deteriorating conditions flooded social media platforms like TikTok and Reddit, tarnishing Egypt’s image as a top travel destination.

In response, Egypt has announced a comprehensive reform plan. The initiative will reorganize access points, introduce eco-friendly electric buses to replace animal rides, regulate commercial activities, and restore historic tombs around the plateau. A new primary entrance on the Cairo-Fayum road and an emphasis on online ticket sales are also part of the modernization efforts.

Orascom Pyramids, a major private partner, is investing heavily in the redevelopment project, aiming to preserve the iconic status of the Giza Pyramids — the only remaining wonder of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Animal welfare has also become a major focus. Long-criticized by groups like PETA for the mistreatment of horses, camels, and donkeys used for tourist rides, the government has introduced new welfare regulations. Electric vehicles are now gradually replacing animal rides within the complex, offering visitors a more ethical and comfortable travel experience.

Beyond a simple facelift, these sweeping changes signal Egypt’s understanding that, in today’s digital era, a single bad review can rapidly snowball into widespread reputational damage. By improving infrastructure, cracking down on exploitative practices, and committing to animal welfare, Egypt aims to ensure that the Giza Pyramids continue to inspire awe for generations to come.
