Disney has filed a trademark lawsuit against Hong Kong-based jewelry company Red Earth Group, alleging unauthorized use of Mickey Mouse imagery in its “Mickey 1928 Collection” marketed under the Satur brand.
The lawsuit, filed on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, in Los Angeles federal court, accuses Red Earth Group of infringing on Disney’s intellectual property by using the likeness of Mickey Mouse in rings, necklaces, earrings, and other accessories. Disney claims that the branding and marketing of these products falsely imply an official collaboration or licensing deal with the company.
According to The Associated Press, Disney’s legal team stated that the jewelry brand is “intentionally misleading consumers”, using promotional content and product descriptions that appeal directly to Disney fans, further blurring the lines of authenticity.
While the 1928 version of Mickey Mouse from the classic Steamboat Willie short has recently entered the public domain in the United States, Disney emphasized that it still retains trademark rights over the character’s image and branding — protections that do not expire with copyright.
One of the specific items mentioned in the complaint is the “Satur Mickey 1928 Classique Ring,” which Disney says exploits the character’s public domain status for unauthorized commercial benefit.
In a formal statement released to the press, Disney affirmed its commitment to protecting its characters and intellectual property:
“Disney is committed to protecting against unauthorized trademark infringement and preventing consumers from being confused by unauthorized uses of Mickey Mouse and our other beloved characters.”
As of now, Disney is seeking an injunction to halt sales of the disputed products and financial compensation for damages.
