CBSE Private Students Worried as ‘Additional Subject’ Option Missing from 2026 Exam Forms

Private candidates applying for the CBSE Board Exams 2026 have raised concerns over the absence of the Additional Subject Examination option in this year’s forms. The board issued a notification on September 8, 2025, inviting applications from Class 10 and 12 private candidates, but students say the portal does not display the additional subject choice that was available earlier.

For many, this route was crucial — particularly for Class 12 science students who studied Physics, Chemistry, and Biology but wanted to add Mathematics for eligibility in engineering and technology courses. Others used the option to switch streams or to clear subjects under the Repeat Theory (RT) category.

A student from the 2024 batch said:

“Earlier, CBSE allowed up to three attempts to clear RT, including through the additional subject option. Now it’s suddenly gone, leaving us stuck.”

Another aspirant preparing for JEE after a drop year shared:

“We studied Mathematics outside school with the hope of appearing as private candidates. Removing this option could cost us our eligibility.”

Beyond academics, students highlighted the psychological toll. Many said the change has created stress and uncertainty about their higher education prospects.

The key questions being raised are:

  • Why was the option discontinued without prior notice?
  • Will CBSE provide alternatives for affected students?
  • Does the board intend to reinstate the facility for 2026?

The September 8 CBSE notice does not explicitly confirm the removal of the provision, but its absence from the portal has alarmed aspirants. Until CBSE issues clarification, uncertainty continues for students who had planned their future around this pathway.
