Bengaluru Metro commuters are set to face yearly fare hikes from 2026. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced that starting February 2026, fares will automatically increase by up to 5% every year.

The move, according to BMRCL, is essential to cover rising operations and maintenance costs as well as to support major expansion projects. However, the decision is likely to face criticism from commuters, especially since metro fares were increased by as much as 71.43% in February 2025 — the steepest hike since 2017 — which already made Namma Metro one of the costliest in India.

Explaining the rationale, the authority highlighted its financial burden:

  • Loan repayments due between FY 2025-26 and FY 2029-30 range from ₹911 crore to ₹1,457 crore annually.
  • Available cash during the same period will fall short, ranging between ₹601 crore and ₹1,018 crore.

BMRCL stated, “No cash accrual will be available to meet asset renewals and replacements. Thus, an annual automatic fare revision formula is necessary.”

Meanwhile, in another key development, BMRCL confirmed that the Pink Line (21.3 km corridor) will start operations in two phases by 2026:

  • The elevated stretch from Tavarekere to Kalena Agrahara (Bannerghatta Road) is expected to open by March 2026.
  • The 13.76-km underground section connecting Dairy Circle to Nagawara via MG Road, Shivajinagar, and Tannery Road is targeted for September 2026.

With fare hikes looming and the much-awaited Pink Line launch on the horizon, Bengaluru’s metro network is preparing for both financial and infrastructural transformation.
