New Traffic Restrictions in Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road Corridor to Ease Chronic Gridlock
In an effort to reduce the notorious traffic jams along Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road (ORR), especially around Marathahalli, the city’s traffic police have rolled out new diversions and access controls that took effect starting Monday.
The latest traffic curbs focus on the stretch between Karthik Nagar Junction and Kalamandir, a high-congestion zone plagued by merging chaos between service roads and the main carriageway—particularly during peak commuting hours.
🚧 Key Diversions Implemented
As per the new plan:
- Vehicles will not be allowed to access ORR from the Kalamandir side via the service road adjacent to Jeevika Hospital.
- Entry into the service road from ORR near the Yamaha showroom has also been restricted.
🔁 New Traffic Flow Directions:
- From Chinnappanahalli Railway Gate to Kadubeesanahalli/Devarabeesanahalli:
Vehicles must enter the service road near Jeevika Hospital and merge back onto ORR at the Yamaha showroom junction. - From Mahadevapura/Karthik Nagar to Whitefield/Varthur:
Vehicles may enter the service road at Kalamandir Junction and proceed towards Kundalahalli and Varthur.
These diversions are designed to decrease conflict points between through traffic on ORR and vehicles entering/exiting service roads.
🛣️ Why It Matters
This stretch of the ORR—between Mahadevapura and Marathahalli—is one of the busiest traffic corridors in the city. It connects:
- Major tech parks
- Densely populated residential complexes
- Prominent schools and colleges
Despite past infrastructure improvements, daily bottlenecks have continued to affect this route, with congestion frequently spilling over into Chinnappanahalli, Kundalahalli, and Devarabeesanahalli.
🚨 Previous Interventions
To control congestion, traffic police have already deployed several micro-level interventions, such as:
- Time-bound restrictions on heavy vehicles
- Redirection of service road entry points
- Temporary no-entry zones
The latest measures are part of a broader strategy to streamline traffic flow on ORR by separating service road users from the mainline traffic.
✅ What to Expect
Commuters using the ORR corridor should:
- Stay updated on route changes
- Allow extra travel time for detours
- Follow updated signage and traffic instructions
The city’s traffic department is expected to monitor these changes and make further adjustments if required based on traffic feedback and flow improvements.
