In a targeted safety campaign, the Bengaluru Traffic Police launched a special operation on June 16, checking thousands of school vehicle drivers for alcohol consumption. The drive, conducted between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., covered 4,559 drivers — out of which 58 were found to be under the influence of alcohol.
The operation was part of an intensified effort to ensure the safety of schoolchildren as the new academic year begins. Police used breathalysers at multiple checkpoints across the city to test the drivers of school buses, vans, and autos.
Authorities have taken strict action against those caught violating the law, including suspension of their driving licenses and possible cancellation of permits.
Bengaluru police emphasized that regular checks will continue, and urged school managements and parents to be vigilant when hiring transportation services for children.
“This is a matter of child safety. Such reckless behaviour will not be tolerated,” a senior police officer said.
The operation has sparked widespread concern among parents and school authorities, who are now calling for tighter regulations and background checks on school transport staff.
