Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday officially kicked off the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) campaign for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, addressing a large public gathering in Samastipur. His remarks strongly indicated that Nitish Kumar will continue as the alliance’s chief ministerial face.
During his address, PM Modi said,
“This time, under the leadership of Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, NDA will break all its previous records of victory. Bihar will give NDA its biggest ever mandate.”
While Modi did not explicitly announce Nitish Kumar’s candidacy as Chief Minister, his statement marked the clearest signal yet that the NDA will contest the polls under Nitish’s leadership — effectively ending speculation over who would lead the alliance in Bihar.
The statement gains added significance as it came just a day after the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance), led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress, declared Tejashwi Yadav as its CM face.
🗳️ Political Context
Opposition leaders had been challenging the NDA to clarify its leadership. Congress veteran Ashok Gehlot recently said,
“Our leader is Tejashwi Yadav. Now the NDA should confirm who their Chief Minister is.”
With PM Modi’s latest remarks, the BJP-JD(U) alliance appears to have settled the leadership question, reinforcing the long-standing partnership between Nitish Kumar and the BJP in the state.
🔥 PM Modi Targets RJD’s Past Rule
In his fiery speech, PM Modi sharply criticized the RJD for Bihar’s deteriorated law and order situation during the Lalu Prasad Yadav era.
“Law and order cannot exist where a party like the RJD is in power. Under RJD rule, extortion, murder, ransom, and kidnapping flourished. The biggest sufferers were the poor, Dalits, women, and youth of Bihar,” Modi said.
He further accused the RJD of nurturing Naxalism and Maoist terrorism, asserting that the NDA government had “broken the back of Naxal forces” since coming to power.
“In 2014, when you gave the NDA a chance, we resolved to free Bihar from Maoist terror. Today, Bihar is largely free, and soon the entire nation will be rid of it — this is Modi’s guarantee,” he added.
🗓️ Election Outlook
The Bihar Assembly elections are expected to be one of the most crucial contests before the 2026 general elections. With Nitish Kumar reaffirmed as the NDA’s face and Tejashwi Yadav leading the Mahagathbandhan, the polls are shaping up as a direct contest between continuity and change.
