Bengaluru: Several regions across Karnataka, including the state capital Bengaluru, have been placed on high alert as weather authorities predict moderate to heavy rainfall through the coming week. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) issued a seven-day advisory, urging citizens to stay alert and avoid flood-prone areas.

According to the KSNDMC, scattered light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds is expected across most parts of the state. The coastal districts, Malnad belt, and southern interior regions are likely to experience heavy rainfall at isolated locations from October 8 to October 12.

On Wednesday, multiple parts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru Urban, Mysuru, Chikkamagaluru, and Dakshina Kannada, are likely to receive light to moderate rain, potentially disrupting transport and outdoor activities.

Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had released a district-wise forecast for the next five days, cautioning about intense spells in southern and coastal Karnataka.

Meanwhile, Skymet Weather has noted that October is typically Bengaluru’s second-wettest month, and rainfall activity is expected to intensify in the coming days.

🌧️ Bengaluru’s October Rainfall Trend

Bengaluru has witnessed above-average rainfall in several Octobers over the past decade.

  • In 2014, the city recorded 343.8 mm of rainfall.
  • In 2017, it climbed to 385.7 mm.
  • The long-term average (1991–2020) has risen to 186.4 mm, compared to 168.3 mm from 1981–2010.
  • In 2024, Yelahanka Air Force Station registered a single-day record of 157 mm.

For October 2025, Skymet predicts that Bengaluru may receive up to 100 mm of rain between October 8 and 12, marking another wet spell for the city.

🌪️ Meteorological Factors Behind the Rains

The ongoing rainfall surge is linked to multiple active weather systems:

  • A cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal near Tamil Nadu
  • A trough extending from coastal Andhra Pradesh to south interior Karnataka
  • The potential formation of another cyclonic system over the north Bay of Bengal on October 8, which may enhance rainfall along the east coast and northern Tamil Nadu

⚠️ Advisory for Residents

Authorities have advised:

  • Avoiding low-lying and flood-prone areas
  • Following KSNDMC and IMD weather advisories
  • Staying alert for waterlogging, power disruptions, and traffic congestion

With persistent weather systems in play, intermittent heavy showers, gusty winds, and thunderstorms are expected across Karnataka in the coming week.
