At least seven passengers were injured on Tuesday after a blast on the railway tracks caused four bogies of the Jaffar Express to derail near Sultan Kot railway station in Shikarpur district, Sindh, according to reports from Dawn News.
The explosion occurred at 8:15 a.m., approximately one kilometre from the Sultan Kot station. Officials confirmed that four injured passengers were shifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), while three others were taken to Civil Hospital, Shikarpur for treatment.
Train Details and Damage
The Jaffar Express was en route to Quetta via Jacobabad when the incident occurred.
- Sukkur Divisional Transport Officer (DTO) Mohsin Ali Sial stated that unaffected passengers were transported to nearby stations to facilitate rescue operations and track repairs.
- Shikarpur SSP Shahzeb Chachar said that the blast targeted a single railway line used by trains traveling between Quetta and Jacobabad. The remaining bogies of the train continued their journey toward Jacobabad.
Investigation and Official Response
Police teams from Shikarpur and Jacobabad have launched a joint investigation to identify those responsible for the blast.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah condemned the attack and directed the Inspector General of Police to submit a detailed report. He also instructed the Larkana Commissioner to ensure medical aid for the injured and oversee relief operations.
Background and Security Concerns
This explosion marks yet another attack targeting Pakistan’s rail infrastructure.
- In late September 2025, six bogies of the same Jaffar Express derailed in Balochistan province under similar circumstances.
- Earlier in March 2025, the train was hijacked by Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) militants, leading to the deaths of 21 passengers and four security personnel before the Pakistani forces neutralized all 33 attackers.
The recurring incidents highlight growing security risks along Pakistan’s key railway routes, particularly those connecting Sindh and Balochistan.
