Did You Know? Your EPS Funds Remain Intact Even After You Withdraw Your PF
Many employees believe that withdrawing their Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) means their Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) amount is also withdrawn—but that’s not the case. Even if you’ve changed jobs or exited the workforce and withdrawn your EPF balance, your EPS funds are still with the EPFO.
EPF vs EPS – What’s the Difference?
While EPF is a retirement savings plan funded by both employer and employee contributions, EPS is designed specifically to provide pension benefits after retirement. Though managed under the same umbrella—the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO)—they serve different purposes.
What Happens to Your EPS Money?
A portion of your employer’s EPF contribution goes to EPS. However, unlike EPF, EPS doesn’t earn interest. Once you withdraw your EPF, the EPS component remains untouched unless specifically claimed. It’s not credited to your bank account, which leads many to overlook it.
Can You Still Access It?
Yes! Your EPS record stays linked to your Universal Account Number (UAN). Even if you’ve withdrawn your PF, your EPS service history remains stored with EPFO. You can log in to the EPFO Member Portal using your UAN and check your service history under the “View” section.
Eligible for a Pension?
If you’ve completed 10 or more years of service, your EPS entitles you to a monthly pension after you turn 58. You’ll need to apply for this pension separately using Form 10D.
What If You’ve Worked Less Than 10 Years?
If your total service is less than 10 years, you’re not eligible for a pension—but you can still claim a refund of your EPS contributions by submitting Form 10C through the EPFO portal.
No UAN? No Problem
If you’re unsure of your UAN or lost your PF details, just go to the UAN Retrieval Page and select “Know Your UAN”. Enter your Aadhaar-linked phone number to receive your UAN details via SMS.
Bottom Line:
Don’t leave your pension money behind. Even if you’ve withdrawn your PF, your EPS could hold significant value for your future. Log in, check your records, and secure your retirement benefits today.
