Bengaluru: Indian sprinter Gurindervir Singh has etched his name in history by setting a new national record in the men’s 100m sprint, clocking 10.2 seconds at the Indian Grand Prix 1 on Friday. He surpassed the previous record of 10.23 seconds, set by his training partner Manikanta H Hoblidhar in 2023.
On a warm afternoon at the SAI South Centre, the Punjab athlete delivered a stellar performance under the guidance of his new coach James Hillier. Racing in Race D, Gurindervir exploded past the halfway mark, surging ahead of his competitors. As the final result flashed on the big screen, he celebrated with a roar of triumph, marking a historic moment in Indian athletics.
Manikanta also improved on his previous record, finishing second in 10.22 seconds, while Amlan Borghohain secured third place with 10.43 seconds. However, Amlan later dominated the 200m race, securing a gold medal.
With five out of six athletes in the race representing the Reliance Foundation, Gurindervir credited his rapid improvement to his training environment.
“Breaking this record was a goal I had set for years. In 2021, I ran 10.27 seconds, just shy of the then-national record of 10.26 seconds. Today, with the right training and a slight tailwind, I finally achieved it. Since joining the Reliance Foundation just 6-7 months ago, my confidence has soared, and I knew I would set a new mark this season,” he said.
Gurindervir’s remarkable achievement cements his position as India’s fastest man, inspiring a new generation of sprinters to aim for even greater heights.
