- Once a Shopping Hotspot, Benga ...

Majestic, once the heart of Bengaluru’s shopping scene, is now a shadow of its former self as footfall dwindles in its once-bustling markets. Iconic shopping destinations like Janata Bazaar and Alankaar Pearl Plaza, which were once the go-to places for everything from clothes and footwear to electronics and stationery, now struggle to attract customers amid the dominance of malls and online shopping.
The Decline of Majestic’s Shopping Culture
For years, Janata Bazaar was known as Bengaluru’s first supermarket, catering primarily to government employees and city residents who came to buy household essentials. However, today, many people are unaware of its existence, and the aging building sees little activity.
Similarly, Alankaar Pearl Plaza, once a thriving hub with over 300 shops selling clothes and accessories, has witnessed a steep decline. At least 50 stores have shut down due to financial losses. “Online markets have taken over. Very few Bengaluru residents visit anymore; our main customers are now from other cities like Tumakuru who come here for budget-friendly ethnic wear,” said Ashok, a member of the Alankaar Pearl Plaza Owners’ Association.
Shoppers Prefer Convenience Over Nostalgia
While many Bengalureans recall their shopping trips to Majestic with fondness, they admit that convenience has taken priority. “Fifteen years ago, festival shopping meant a trip to Majestic. My parents believed the best prices were here. But now, e-commerce platforms offer better deals with the convenience of home delivery, easy returns, and exchanges,” said Deeksha Joshi, a content writer.
With worsening traffic and more shopping options available at malls and online stores, Majestic’s traders face an uncertain future. The once-thriving market now stands as a relic of a bygone era, struggling to keep up with the changing shopping landscape.
