- Dileesh Pothan on Drug Use in ...

Filmmaker and actor Dileesh Pothan has addressed concerns about drug abuse in the film industry, acknowledging its presence but refuting claims of widespread misuse. Responding to media queries following the recent arrest of a makeup artist from Aavesham for cannabis possession, Pothan emphasized that the film industry is being unfairly singled out.
“Of the 4,000 people arrested recently, only a small number were from the film industry. People from various walks of life were involved. It’s incorrect to assume that drug use is rampant in cinema just because it exists in society as a whole,” he stated. However, he stressed that drug use in any form cannot be justified.
“It is wrong to consume any substance that is illegal. Even legal substances like alcohol and cigarettes should be used in moderation. Those who overuse drugs cannot lead a healthy life,” he added.
On Cinema’s Influence and Responsibility
Pothan also spoke about the role of films in shaping young minds, emphasizing the need for responsible filmmaking while ensuring creative freedom.
“Good cinema is born when a filmmaker works without unnecessary restrictions. At the same time, there must be a sense of responsibility towards society. Cinema thrives on striking a balance between the two,” he said.
He also touched upon the need for better implementation of censorship laws. “Though we have regulations, their enforcement is questionable. Parents should ensure that children watch only age-appropriate films instead of exposing them to unsuitable content,” he remarked.
Pothan’s statements come amid growing discussions about drug use in the entertainment industry, with calls for stricter monitoring and responsible filmmaking gaining traction.
