India could see significant disruptions on February 12, 2026, as central trade unions and farmers’ organisations have called for a nationwide strike, popularly known as a Bharat Bandh. Several public services — including banks, transport and government offices — may experience partial impact across multiple states.
While there is no official nationwide holiday declaration, local conditions may determine closures in certain regions.
Why Has the Bharat Bandh Been Called?
The strike has been announced by a joint platform of 10 central trade unions, including INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF and UTUC.
The unions are protesting against the four new labour codes that replaced 29 existing labour laws. According to union leaders, the updated framework weakens worker protections, reduces job security and simplifies hiring and firing processes for employers.
In addition to labour reforms, the groups are opposing:
- The Draft Seed Bill
- The Electricity Amendment Bill
- The SHANTI Act (Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India)
- The Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025
The unions have also demanded stronger social security measures and the restoration of MGNREGA provisions.
Strike notices have reportedly been issued across various sectors, and participation is expected in multiple industries.
Will Schools and Colleges Remain Closed?
There is no central directive ordering nationwide closure of schools and colleges. However, institutions in states such as Kerala, Karnataka and Odisha may suspend classes depending on local support for the bandh and the availability of transport services.
Students and parents are advised to monitor official announcements from their respective institutions.
Will Banks Function on February 12?
Public sector bank services are likely to be affected, as major employee unions — including AIBEA, AIBOA and BEFI — have expressed support for the strike.
State Bank of India has acknowledged the strike and stated that operations may be “impacted to a limited extent.” IDBI Bank has also received formal notice from bank unions.
However, February 12 has not been declared an official banking holiday by the Reserve Bank of India. Branches are expected to remain open, though customers may face:
- Delays in cheque clearances
- Limited counter services
- Slower deposits and withdrawals
Online banking platforms and ATMs are expected to operate normally, although minor service delays cannot be ruled out. Private banks may function with minimal disruption, depending on staff participation.
What About Transport and Markets?
Public transport services in certain areas may be disrupted due to protests or road blockades. Markets and retail establishments in protest-affected zones could remain closed as a precautionary measure.
Government offices may also see reduced attendance or partial shutdowns, depending on the scale of participation.
Essential services — including hospitals, ambulances and emergency utilities — are expected to operate without interruption. Airports are likely to function normally, though passengers are advised to account for possible traffic congestion.
Farmers Extend Support Over Trade Concerns
Farmers’ groups, including the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), have extended full backing to the bandh.
In a recent statement, SKM criticised the proposed India–US trade framework, claiming it could negatively impact domestic agriculture. The group raised concerns about potential increases in imports of dairy products, animal feed and soybean oil, arguing that such measures may harm Indian farmers.
AIKS leaders have warned that trade agreements must safeguard national agricultural interests and ensure long-term protection for farmers and dairy producers.
What Should Citizens Expect?
While a complete nationwide shutdown is unlikely, disruptions are expected in selected sectors and regions. The overall impact will largely depend on participation levels and local administrative decisions.
Authorities have not announced any blanket closures. Citizens are advised to check updates from local officials and service providers before planning travel or banking activities.
