Kozhikode: The Juvenile Justice Board has denied bail to yet another accused in the Shahabas murder case. The accused, a Class 10 student from GVHSS Thamarassery, has been ordered to remain in the observation home for boys at the Social Justice Complex, Vellimadukunnu, until March 15.

The court also directed the Superintendent of the observation home to ensure that the student is provided with the necessary facilities to appear for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations. The District Child Protection Officer has been assigned the responsibility of facilitating the exams.

The accused is allegedly involved in a school gang clash that resulted in the fatal attack on Shahabas, a student of MJ Higher Secondary School. Five other students from the same school have already been detained in connection with the case. They are currently being held at the observation home in Vellimadukunnu after their bail requests were denied by the court.

On Monday, the five detained students appeared for their first SSLC exam under heightened security, amid protests from right-wing student organisations and the Youth Congress. Due to the intense opposition, authorities were compelled to set up an exam centre within the Social Justice Complex to facilitate the examinations.

The fatal clash took place on Thursday evening, and Shahabas (16) succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Saturday. The accused students will remain in detention until March 15 as per the court’s order.
