Kochi: In a major crackdown on drug distribution in educational institutions, the police arrested two individuals from West Bengal for allegedly supplying ganja to students at the Government Polytechnic College, Kalamassery. The arrests come in the wake of a midnight raid at the college hostel, which led to the seizure of nearly 2 kg of ganja.
Drug Peddlers Targeting Students
According to police sources, the two Bengal natives were key operatives in a drug network that smuggled ganja into Kerala via train routes. Investigations revealed that the duo had specifically distributed large quantities of the drug for Holi celebrations at the campus.
Midnight Raid and Arrests
Acting on a tip-off from the college principal, the police raided the hostel on March 13, uncovering a large stash of narcotics. During the operation, officers arrested:
- Akash M (21), a final-year student from Kollam, with 1.9 kg of ganja. He has been remanded to judicial custody.
- Adithyan (20) from Alappuzha and Abhiraj R (21) from Kollam, found with 9.7 grams of ganja. They were released on station bail.
Drug Network Unraveled
Further investigations led to the arrest of former students Aashique and Shalik, who allegedly acted as suppliers for Akash. Police suspect that funds for the drug purchase were raised under the guise of Holi celebrations.
Mastermind Behind the Operation
On March 16, authorities arrested Anuraj R (21), a third-year mechanical engineering student, believed to be the mastermind behind the operation. Police say he was responsible for:
✅ Collecting funds on campus under false pretenses
✅ Coordinating drug deliveries with former students
✅ Facilitating distribution among hostel residents
Strict Action by College Authorities
Following the incident, all three arrested students have been suspended, and the college administration has ordered an internal inquiry.
Authorities continue to intensify their crackdown on drug networks infiltrating college campuses, with more arrests expected in the coming days.
