As the Malayalam film industry reacts to actor Dileep’s acquittal in the 2017 abduction and assault case, a 2017 interview of director Vinayan has resurfaced, reigniting controversy. In the interview, recorded days after Dileep’s arrest, filmmaker Vinayan alleged that Dileep was a “master manipulator” who wielded immense influence in the Malayalam film industry, even claiming that superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal were “puppets in his hands.”

Public sentiment still divided after acquittal

While some supporters claim that “truth has won,” many others believe that the verdict is not a clean chit. Concerns have been raised over the trial proceedings, especially since several key witnesses turned hostile. Dileep’s first public reaction, where he indirectly criticised his former wife Manju Warrier, also drew public backlash.

Vinayan’s old statements now gaining traction online reflect the long-standing tensions within the Malayalam film fraternity.

Vinayan’s Allegations Against Dileep

In his interview with Times of India, Vinayan said:

“From my personal experience, I know that Dileep is a master manipulator. Mammootty and Mohanlal have just been puppets in his hands.”

Vinayan claimed that Dileep had an “unofficial kingpin-like influence” over Malayalam cinema, with the ability to shape careers and block opportunities.

He further alleged that Dileep’s animosity toward him began when Vinayan, as president of MACTA (Malayalam Cine Technicians Association), intervened in a dispute involving Dileep backing out of a film after accepting a ₹40 lakh advance.

A 10-Year Career Setback

Vinayan has repeatedly stated that refusing to side with Dileep cost him “nearly 10 years” in the industry. He claimed that Dileep’s stance was simple:

“Anyone who teaches me a lesson should not be in Malayalam cinema.”

Ironically, Vinayan was one of the first directors to cast Dileep in lead roles, working together on films like Kalyana Sougandhikam, Ullasapoongattu, Anuragakottaram, and Rakshasa Rajavu.

Reaction After Dileep’s Arrest

Following Dileep’s 2017 arrest, Vinayan described the case as a “wound on the heart of Malayalam cinema,” alleging that Dileep was “an expert in exacting revenge.” He urged authorities to ensure justice for the survivor.

Vinayan Responds to Dileep’s 2025 Acquittal

After the recent verdict, Vinayan said the government must ensure that the conspiracy angle is thoroughly investigated. He believes continued court scrutiny — ideally by a higher court — is essential for public trust.

While Dileep can legally rejoin film bodies, Vinayan warned that any eagerness by organisations to welcome him back would “expose their true intentions.”
He added:

“Dileep was asked to prove the truth, and he did. Nonetheless, I stand with the survivor.”

The resurfacing of Vinayan’s explosive statements has added new fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding Dileep’s public image and future in the Malayalam film industry.
