The dumping yard near Munnar has become a growing hazard for local wildlife, with wild elephants increasingly consuming plastic waste. Recently, two single-tusked elephants, known as Ottakompan, were spotted feeding on plastic-laden vegetable waste at the panchayat-managed yard in Kallar.

Sources reveal that wild elephants have been frequenting the site for months, attracted by the easy access to discarded food. Compounding the danger, a low-lying transformer and exposed power lines within the yard pose a serious risk of electrocution for these animals.

Authorities and wildlife experts have raised concerns over the urgent need for waste management solutions to prevent further harm to Munnar’s wildlife.
