Former U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out at Indian-American politician Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday after Mamdani delivered a surprising victory in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Trump, known for his fiery rhetoric, posted a scathing critique on Truth Social, calling Mamdani a “100% Communist Lunatic.”

Trump expressed outrage at what he described as the Democratic Party “crossing the line,” adding, “He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart, he’s got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him.” Trump also accused Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of “groveling” to Mamdani and warned that the rise of such figures marked a pivotal moment in American politics.

Zohran Mamdani, 33, a Democratic socialist and State Assemblyman, is now the likely Democratic nominee in the upcoming New York City mayoral race. His platform includes bold proposals like making public transportation free, freezing rent increases on rent-stabilized housing, and introducing government-run grocery stores. These initiatives would be funded by a proposed $10 billion tax hike targeting corporations and the wealthy.

Mamdani, who is of Indian and Ugandan descent and a practicing Muslim, has also drawn attention for his strong pro-Palestinian stance. Notably, he vowed that as mayor, he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he set foot in New York, referencing International Criminal Court warrants issued in late 2024.

His victory is being hailed by progressives as a turning point for leftist politics in the U.S., while conservatives are using his rise to attack the Democratic Party. Right-wing commentators and activists have also stirred controversy by linking Mamdani to 9/11 in social media posts targeting his religion.

As the general election approaches, Mamdani’s candidacy is expected to become a national flashpoint, symbolizing a broader ideological clash between progressive reform and conservative resistance.
