Former India captain Sourav Ganguly expressed his surprise upon hearing about Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket. Speaking to Sports Tak on May 17, Ganguly respected both Kohli and Rohit Sharma for choosing to step away from the longest format ahead of India’s five-Test series against England.
“Playing or leaving is your own decision. Both Virat and Rohit have left the game of their own free will. Both have had incredible careers,” Ganguly said. While he expected Rohit’s retirement, he admitted being taken aback by Kohli’s decision. “Yes, I am surprised,” he added.
With Rohit’s exit, questions around India’s next Test captain have intensified. Shubman Gill’s name has emerged as a strong contender, especially considering the fitness doubts surrounding Jasprit Bumrah. Ganguly acknowledged the complexity of the selectors’ task and emphasized the need for long-term planning.
“The selectors will take decisions as per their understanding. A lot must be thought about in terms of captaincy. Long-term thinking is necessary. Many are talking about Jasprit Bumrah’s injury concerns. We will have to consider everything together,” Ganguly remarked.
In other cricket news, the Indian Premier League (IPL) faced disruption on May 17 when rain led to the abandonment of the match at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium without a single ball bowled.
On the topic of the IPL final, which is reportedly being shifted from Eden Gardens, Kolkata, to Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Ganguly voiced his optimism. “The final cannot be removed so easily! Efforts are underway to conduct the final here by CAB. Protesting won’t help. Talks are ongoing with the board. CAB and BCCI share a great relationship. I am hopeful the final will take place in Kolkata,” he said.
