Singapore Airlines to Hire 100+ Air India Pilots for Scoot; Deputation Includes Global Exposure, Embraer Training
In a major step towards strengthening bilateral aviation cooperation, Singapore Airlines (SIA) is deputing over 100 Air India (AI) pilots to serve with its low-cost subsidiary, Scoot. The move not only addresses Scoot’s growing demand for experienced cockpit crew but also opens doors for Air India pilots to gain international exposure and hands-on training on Embraer jets, a fleet currently absent in Air India’s operations.
The pilots, stationed at Singapore Changi Airport, will serve voluntarily on deputation for a period ranging from one to two years. Air India, now under Tata Group ownership, is nominating qualified captains and first officers for the program, which is expected to begin soon.
This initiative is a result of the deepening alliance between Singapore Airlines and Air India, strengthened further after SIA acquired a 25.1% stake in the merged entity of Air India and Vistara.
A Win-Win Strategy for Both Airlines
Air India CEO and MD Campbell Wilson described the move as a “win-win” for both carriers. While Scoot gains experienced flight crew to meet immediate operational needs, Air India enhances its workforce with globally trained professionals proficient in Embraer aircraft—a valuable asset as it undergoes rapid transformation post-privatization.
Senior SIA executives including Basil Kwauk and Hamish Maxwell are actively engaged in helping Air India with strategic turnaround plans and human capital development.
A Strategic Partnership with Long-Term Vision
The partnership reflects SIA’s larger multi-hub strategy and commitment to the Indian market. Goh Choon Phong, CEO of Singapore Airlines, reaffirmed the airline’s dedication to leveraging India’s growth potential through joint planning, personnel exchanges, and shared route strategies.
Currently, the two carriers have a comprehensive codeshare agreement and frequently exchange operational best practices. Indian aviation personnel have been visiting Singapore for training and strategic insight, further cementing the cross-border collaboration.
Scoot’s Fleet Expansion and Market Impact
Scoot recently announced the induction of Embraer E190-E2 aircraft into its fleet, with services starting in May 2024. The inaugural route is set to connect Singapore and Krabi, Thailand. The pilot deputation from Air India will help the airline efficiently scale these new operations.
Scoot’s management emphasized its commitment to sourcing the best talent, stating: “We actively seek skilled professionals both domestically and internationally to support Scoot’s continued growth.”
India–Singapore Aviation Corridor
Singapore Airlines transported over 2.4 million passengers between India and Singapore in FY25, with nearly 65% using Singapore as a transit hub to Southeast Asia and Oceania. The corridor is highly competitive, with players like Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways, and Qantas also vying for a share of this lucrative market.
However, SIA’s strategic tie-up with Air India gives it an edge in market access, crew pipeline development, and deeper network integration.
Looking Ahead
As both airlines navigate regulatory frameworks, their long-term objective remains aligned: building capacity, enhancing global competitiveness, and delivering greater value to passengers. The pilot deputation scheme is just one step in a broader vision of synergy, training, and operational excellence.
