Rapido Sets New Pricing Benchmark for Food Delivery with Three-Tier Flat-Fee Model
Rapido is preparing to launch its new food delivery platform, ‘Ownly’, in mid-July with a soft rollout in Bengaluru. In a move that challenges the norms set by industry giants Zomato and Swiggy, Rapido will introduce a simplified three-tier flat-fee structure based on order value—marking a shift from commission-based models.
As per internal sources and communications with the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), Rapido will fully eliminate platform fees and instead rely on consistent delivery charges. Orders above ₹400 will incur a delivery fee of ₹50 (₹59 including GST), completely borne by the restaurant. Orders ranging between ₹100 and ₹400 will see restaurants paying ₹29.50 (₹25 plus GST). For orders under ₹100, costs are shared: customers will pay ₹23.60, and restaurants ₹11.80, totaling ₹35.40 in delivery revenue.
This approach positions Rapido as a more transparent and predictable option for restaurant partners, in contrast to Zomato and Swiggy, which levy separate platform fees of ₹10 per order (₹11.80 with GST) and charge commissions ranging from 16% to 30% of the order value.
For example, while a ₹500 order on Zomato or Swiggy could cost restaurants ₹80–₹150 in commission, Rapido would charge a flat ₹59. On a ₹300 order, the cost difference narrows (₹29.50 for Rapido vs ₹48–₹90 for others). However, at the low end—say an ₹80 order—Rapido’s combined charge of ₹35.40 might exceed competitors’ fees (₹12–₹24).
The startup has also promised pricing parity with offline menu rates to appeal to value-conscious diners.
Despite no official comment from Rapido on the final rate card, industry experts suggest the flat-rate model balances affordability for consumers with sustainable margins for restaurants. With Bengaluru as its test bed, Rapido aims to reshape the food delivery landscape with a bold, restaurant-friendly pricing approach.
