New Delhi, March 17, 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a candid conversation on American scientist Lex Fridman’s podcast, strongly criticized the United Nations and other international organizations, calling them “almost irrelevant” in addressing modern global conflicts. He pointed to ongoing crises in the Middle East and tensions between China and the US, stating that these institutions have failed to reform and remain ineffective in enforcing global rules.

“The international organizations that were created have become almost irrelevant. There is no reform in them. Institutions like the UN cannot play their role. Those who disregard laws and rules continue to act unchecked,” PM Modi remarked during the podcast.

Lessons from the Pandemic and Call for Unity

Reflecting on the Covid-19 pandemic, PM Modi highlighted how it exposed the vulnerabilities of even the most advanced nations. He noted that while the crisis initially appeared to be a turning point for global unity, it instead led to further division and uncertainty.

“Covid-19 has shown us our limitations. No matter how powerful or technologically advanced a nation is, we all faced the same reality during the pandemic. Instead of fostering peace, the world entered a phase of instability and war,” he said.

PM Modi stressed the need for nations to shift from conflict to cooperation, advocating for a development-driven approach rather than expansionism. He emphasized that in today’s interconnected and interdependent world, no country can function in isolation.

India’s Push for UNSC Reform

For decades, India has been advocating for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), arguing that the current structure—established in 1945—does not reflect contemporary geopolitical realities. New Delhi has reiterated that the UNSC, with its five permanent members (Russia, the UK, China, France, and the US) and 10 rotating non-permanent members, needs urgent reforms to be relevant in the 21st century.

In his address at the UN’s ‘Summit of the Future’ last year, PM Modi made a strong case for restructuring global governance, stating that “global action must match global ambition.” The UK, France, and the US have expressed support for India’s inclusion in the UNSC, but significant opposition remains.

A Vision for a Cooperative World

Addressing global conflicts, PM Modi expressed concern over increasing tensions worldwide. He urged world leaders to prioritize collaboration over confrontation.

“As I have said before, the world is interdependent and interconnected. Everyone needs one another; no country can thrive alone. In all the global forums I attend, the common concern is conflict, and we all hope for peace soon,” he stated.

The podcast, which touched on critical international issues, also showcased lighter moments, including PM Modi’s appreciation of Lex Fridman chanting the ‘Gayatri Mantra.’

As global conflicts persist, PM Modi’s remarks signal India’s growing push for reforming international institutions to better reflect today’s geopolitical landscape.
