OpenAI has introduced exciting updates to ChatGPT, benefiting users across both the free and Plus subscription tiers. While the company continues to develop ambitious projects like a Super Assistant and a new AI device designed with former Apple designer Jony Ive, it has also focused on enhancing the current ChatGPT experience.
In response to recent developments from competitors like Google’s Gemini chatbot, OpenAI has rolled out several improvements for its user base.
Codex Now Available to ChatGPT Plus Subscribers with Internet Access Option
ChatGPT Plus members can now use OpenAI’s advanced AI coding assistant, Codex, which has gained the ability to access the internet—though this feature remains disabled by default to ensure privacy and security. With internet access enabled, Codex can retrieve the latest coding libraries, documentation, and information, making it more powerful for complex programming tasks that require up-to-date data beyond its pre-trained knowledge.
Additional upgrades to Codex include voice input for coding instructions and improved management of pull requests, helping streamline software development workflows within ChatGPT. This integration is powered by OpenAI’s specialized ‘o3’ model.
Expanded Memory Feature for Free ChatGPT Users
Free-tier users also received a significant upgrade with the expansion of ChatGPT’s memory feature, previously exclusive to paid subscribers. Now, ChatGPT can recall past conversation details and user preferences, allowing for more personalized and context-aware interactions.
This memory helps users avoid repeating information across sessions and enhances ChatGPT’s usefulness in tasks like writing, learning, and seeking advice. Users retain full control over privacy settings—they can review, manage, or disable memory and choose “temporary chats” if they prefer conversations not to be saved.
Free users get a “lightweight” version of memory that supports short-term continuity, while Plus subscribers continue to enjoy more extensive long-term memory. The update is being gradually enabled automatically for most free users.
