Kozhikode: In a major step toward tackling illegal waste dumping, Kerala’s Suchitwa Mission has been leveraging WhatsApp to identify and penalize offenders. Since the launch of the initiative in September, the helpline has received 5,495 complaints, leading to the imposition of ₹22,55,830 in fines and legal action in 17 cases.
The system allows citizens to report incidents of illegal waste dumping, garbage burning, and the release of contaminated water. To encourage participation, a reward scheme was introduced for individuals helping to catch violators. So far, 24 people have received a total of ₹29,750 in rewards for their assistance in exposing illegal activities.
As per official data, 61.75% of the complaints received have been accepted. Among Kerala’s districts, Thiruvananthapuram recorded the highest number of complaints (599), with an impressive resolution rate of 86.14%. In contrast, Wayanad reported the least number of cases.
Authorities are hopeful that this tech-driven approach will enhance waste management and discourage illegal disposal practices across the state. With more citizens actively participating in the initiative, Kerala is setting a strong example for community-driven environmental enforcement.
