In a significant move, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has extended the free online Aadhaar document update facility by one more year—now available until June 14, 2026. This service enables Aadhaar number holders to update their Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) documents through the official myAadhaar portal at zero cost.

Previously scheduled to end in June 2025, this initiative was introduced to maintain “document hygiene” across the Aadhaar system and make the update process more accessible for citizens. It proves particularly helpful for individuals whose demographic information may have changed due to marriage, relocation, or other life events.

UIDAI announced via social media:
“UIDAI extends free online document upload facility till 14th June 2026; to benefit millions of Aadhaar Number Holders. This free service is available only on the myAadhaar portal.”

What Can Be Updated Online?

  • Name (if eligible for change)
  • Address
  • Other demographic data (PoI and PoA only)

Note: Changes related to mobile number, email ID, biometrics, or photograph still require a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, with applicable standard fees.

How to Update Aadhaar Documents Online:

  1. Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
  2. Log in using your Aadhaar number and OTP
  3. Upload scanned PoI and PoA documents (JPEG, PNG, or PDF up to 2 MB)
  4. Submit and note your 14-digit Update Request Number (URN) for tracking

For Address Change:

  • Click on ‘Proceed to Update Address’
  • Enter new address
  • Upload supporting document
  • Submit and receive URN

Why This Matters:

Aadhaar, the 12-digit identification number issued by UIDAI, serves as a crucial document for identity and address verification across India. It is mandatory for various services including bank accounts, tax filings, government schemes, and SIM card issuance. This extension provides much-needed convenience to millions of users, reducing the burden of in-person visits for document updates.
