Starbucks, NDTV, Economic Times Now Recognized as Well-Known Trademarks by Indian IP Office
In a recent development that reinforces the brand value and market reputation of leading companies, the Indian Intellectual Property Office has officially declared Starbucks, New Delhi Television (NDTV), and Economic Times as “well-known trademarks.” The announcement was published in the Trademark Journal dated April 14, 2025.
Alongside these three major names, Matrix Cosmec Private Limited and T.T. (Rikhab Chand Jain) were also granted the prestigious designation, as per the applications submitted by their respective holding companies.
According to the published notification, the decision was made under Rule 124(4) of the Trade Marks Rules, 2017. It noted that either no objections were filed or any objections received had been withdrawn, paving the way for these marks to be listed under the well-known category.
What is a Well-Known Trademark?
A well-known trademark receives a unique status in intellectual property law. Unlike standard trademarks that are limited to specific categories, well-known trademarks enjoy enhanced protection across all product and service categories. This prevents third parties from using similar or deceptive marks—even for unrelated goods—thereby safeguarding the brand’s identity and consumer trust.
This recognition shields brands from dilution, misrepresentation, and unfair commercial exploitation, ensuring their reputation remains intact.
How Brands Qualify
To qualify as a well-known trademark in India, applicants must submit evidence proving the mark’s widespread recognition. The Registrar of Trade Marks evaluates factors including:
- Duration and extent of brand use
- Geographic spread of operations
- Public recognition and brand value
- Records of brand enforcement
- Judicial or regulatory recognition as well-known
Once these are validated, the proposed mark is published for public review. If unchallenged, it proceeds to the official well-known trademarks list.
India’s Expanding List of Elite Brands
India has recognized numerous global and domestic brands under this category in recent years. Notable names include Google, Apple, Microsoft, Mercedes-Benz, Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Amazon, Flipkart, ICICI Bank, and Taj Hotels, among others.
The latest inclusion of Starbucks, NDTV, and Economic Times further solidifies their standing as household names in India, ensuring extended brand protection for the future.
