Sonia Gandhi Launches Sharp Attack on BJP, Says Nehru’s Legacy Is Being ‘Deliberately Distorted’

In a rare and strongly worded public address, Congress MP Sonia Gandhi launched a direct attack on the ruling BJP, accusing it of running a systematic campaign to “vilify” India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Speaking at the launch of the Nehru Centre India at Jawahar Bhawan, Gandhi said the ruling establishment’s aim was not only to erase Nehru’s contributions but to undermine the very foundations on which modern India was built.

“Let there be no doubt whatsoever that the project to vilify Nehru is the main objective of the ruling establishment today,” she said. “Their goal is not just to erase him; it is actually to destroy the social, political, and economic foundations on which our nation has been founded.”

‘Criticism is welcome, but mischief is not’

Gandhi stressed that Nehru’s work, ideas, and policies were open to debate and criticism, but accused the BJP of intentionally twisting his writings and speeches.

“Analysis and criticism of Nehru’s contributions are always welcome,” she said. “But deliberate mischief with what he wrote and what he said is unacceptable.”

Indirect attack, clear target

Though Sonia Gandhi did not directly name the BJP or RSS, her remarks were unambiguous in their target. She accused the ruling party of attempting to rewrite history and distort Nehru’s role in shaping a democratic, secular India.

The Congress has repeatedly accused the BJP of downplaying or questioning Nehru’s legacy, particularly in school textbooks and official narratives.
